Bag packers at Morrisons!

A group of year 4 children travelled to Morrisons this week to help spread some Christmas cheer and raise money. 

Everyone took part in bag packing and chatting to customers. The children raised over £100 for the Text Santa charities.

Football with year 4

For the past two weeks year 4 have been lucky enough to receive expert coaching from on-side football coaching. They really enjoyed the different drills, activities and exercises. 

Ruby said: We had some men come into our school for P.E  we were doing football. We played a game called cat and mouse, that was my favourite game.I learnt how to be in a team and work with other people. I loved it, it was so so fun.

Declan said: The past two weeks we have been doing football with football coaches .My favourite drill was when we got to do some shooting at Kieran.I have  learnt  skills and tricks.

Henry said: We Enjoyed the football coaches they made good lessens for us. Our favourite activities where the dribbling and the shooting at the goalkeeper.I loved it there.

Story maps

We have been trying to retell the story of Rosé Blanche using a story map. 

A story map is a series of quick sketches made to try to remember the sequence of a story. These drawings also contain a word, phrase or speech to give the reader a little more deal about that section of the story.

Rose Blanche

In class this week we have been reading Rose Blanche, a book by Roberto Innocenti and Ian McEwan. 

It is set in Germany during the Second World War and tells the story of Rose, a young German girl, who witnesses a change in Germany.This change goes from celebration and expectation at the beginning of the war, to heartache and sadness near the end of the war.

Today in English we focussed on a woman that turned her back during the capture of a young boy by soldiers, in the streets of Germany.

We looked at questions we would like to ask her which included:

"Have you ever seen anything like this before?"

"Were you frightened?"

"Didn't you want to help the boy?"

We also set up a decision alley for Ben to walk down, to see if she made the right decision.

 

Evacuees for the day!

On Wednesday we went to a trip about an evacuee experience from Sheringham to Holt on a train I went with Cameron and Kyle .We met ARP wardens what told us what to do. We were meant to get off at Weybourne but it got bombed badly so we  had no choice but to get off at Holt .They did not know what to do with us so we had to stay there with them .We got bombed too! My group was called Spitfires what was obviously named after the plane Spitfire . Our group first went to the dig for victory lesson and then we made our sandwiches  . Mine had meat, mixed vinegar with brown sauce and vegetables chutney and cheese.  After that we put a gas mask on and also learned about Incendary bombs . Later on  we had to look round a cottage and clean it up.Then finally we had our lunch it was really really nice . Then we went home on a minibus .

On Wednesday we  went on the coach to Sheringham  and it took a hour and a half  to get there.When we got there I got on a steam train with ARP wardens and we were supposed to get of at Weyborne  but a bomb got dropped  there. So we had to get off at Holt.When we got there a man and a lady took me to a building where I had to line up. Suddenly  a ear piercing  air raid siren came off  I had to  come in side  the building  and get down low. Suddenly I heard planes flying past getting closer and closer to me. Just then a bomb as loud as thunder came down luckily I survived .Then I did a job in a cottage  for a lady  and I washed up for her.Then I had to help in the garden . I did planting peas. Then I made my sandwich with rations.

More posters

Before we were evacuated to Sheringham on our class trip, we were asked to design some evacuee posters that would persuade parents and guardians to send their children away from London. Again, we used comic life on the iPads to produce these posters and we had to make sure they were eye-catching, use different font and include a picture or photo.

Badminton rally!

During PE, this half term, the year 4s have been learning how to play badminton. 

This week we had a look at which pair of players could produce the longest rally. 

Elliot and Dylan produced a rally of 17 shots, however Dylan's and Jenson's rally of 11 had a wide range of shots, including forehand and backhand shots.

A visitor in class

On Friday we were lucky enough to have a visitor in class. ray came to visit and talk to us about his experiences during World War 2.

Ray grew up in the East End of London during the war years and told us how he didn't want to get evacuated. instead, he stayed in London during the Blitz.

He told us loads about his childhood, including how long the queues for eggs and bread were (1/4 mile!), how he found an unexploded bomb, how he was buried after a blast and his Christmases during World War 2.

We found out so much and it was great to hear from someone that was our age, during the 1940s.

The war effort back home

Everyone was asked to help win the war, by making extra efforts and working harder on the 'home front'. Children saved pennies, collected scrap metal and food waste, and knitted woolly hats for soldiers.

 

Posters showed people how to put on a gas mask and how to plant vegetables. A government information campaign told people what to do - and what not to do. As well as making fun of the enemy to keep spirits high!

We have been writing newspaper reports in class. We stepped back in time to 4th September 1939, the day after Neville Chamberlain's announcement that Britain would enter World War 2.

We had to make sure we included:
